Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) pertains to local government entities including public libraries, including access to programming, services, and facilities. Come to this program and learn if your library and its services measure up. Alyssa Gleason, the Public Education Coordinator for the RI Governor's Commission on Disabilities, will discuss public libraries' responsibilities concerning equal access to civic life, accessible communications, open meetings, and Title II documentation. You will have the opportunity to ask her questions about the ADA, including those particular to your library. In the second part of the program, Ellen Kreutler will discuss how the MS Dream Center staff and volunteers go to Rhode Island libraries, cultural sites, restaurants and recreational areas to survey them about how well they conform to the ADA. The results of their reviews become public information on the website Accessible RI: A guide to accessibility in the Ocean State. RI residents and visitors can use the site to research accessibility in the facilities listed on Accessible RI.
