The Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS) is Rhode Island’s state library agency. OLIS provides support and services to libraries of all types, coordinating library services statewide to ensure that all Rhode Islanders have free access to superior library services that meet their needs for education, work, and personal growth and fulfillment.  The agency facilitates resource sharing and interlibrary cooperation through the Library of Rhode Island (LORI), a multi-type network of over 200 libraries. OLIS provides direct library service to the blind and physically handicapped through Talking Books Plus, and participates in planning and providing access to government information online for state agencies and the public. OLIS also administers state aid to libraries; in 2016 the agency awarded grants-in-aid that included $7.7 million to Rhode Island’s cities and towns for library services, $2.7 million in public library construction reimbursement of 18 projects in 16 municipalities, and $1 million for the Statewide Reference Resource Center at Providence Public Library (AskRI.org).

Art for the Here-Life

We create decorative artwork using the beautiful and primitive images carved on olde New England gravestones; give lectures and tours on cemetery art, history and symbolism as well as teach gravestone rubbing classes! Our work aims to entertain and educate on the historical perspective of old cemeteries by documenting and preserving the beautiful art they contain. To produce our               three-dimensional art pieces, we perfected a casting technique which exactly replicates the original gravestone carving. The creations in our collection are derived from 17th-21st century gravestones found in cemeteries throughout the New England region. All our pieces are hand-formed and finished in a process we specifically developed. It’s important to note that no stones are ever harmed by our techniques—preservation is our primary concern! The Gravestone Girls endeavour to help preserve a rich folk art tradition unique to our nation. We hope you are intrigued our activities to investigate and expand on the special history which lives in everyone’s backyards.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is the government agency that oversees lawful immigration to the United States. USCIS is funded primarily by immigration and naturalization benefit fees charged to applicants and petitioners. Fees collected from individuals or organizations filing immigration benefit requests are deposited into the Immigration Examinations Fee Account (IEFA). Congress created the IEFA in 1988, establishing the authority to recover the full cost of immigration benefit processing. This account represents approximately 95 percent of USCIS’ fiscal year (FY) 2016 total budget authority. The remaining budget authority comes from two other mandatory fee accounts and appropriated funding for the E-Verify program. USCIS will secure America’s promise as a nation of immigrants by providing accurate and useful information to our customers, granting immigration and citizenship benefits, promoting an awareness and understanding of citizenship, and ensuring the integrity of our immigration system.
